The Path to Healing Psoriasis: 4 Books to Get You Started

Over the past few weeks I have been asked by a lot of friends, clients and acquaintances about my psoriasis. I was diagnosed with psoriasis almost 10 years ago, but I had been living with the condition for a while even before that. As most psoriatics (and anyone with an autoimmune disease) know, the diagnosis can be devastating. Traditional Western medicine offers neither a conclusive cause nor a definitive cure. Instead, it offers a decidedly unsystematic toolbox of management options, some of which are downright scary, and none of which are guaranteed to work. With my diagnosis came a sense of helplessness, desperation and fear. And unlike others affected by the condition, I think I was lucky to escape clinical depression. It was the principles of yoga that helped me to overcome those feelings and seek a solution for myself.  You see, the yoga philosophy about health is a holistic one where, rather than looking at just the immune system malfunction alone, you examine all the functions of the body as a whole. In my case, it meant linking together symptoms I never thought were related to my skin. In a holistic system, lifestyle changes are key to bringing the body into balance. Well, lifestyle changes and a deep belief that given the right conditions, the body will heal itself.  And you know what? My psoriasis improved. It even cleared away to for a long time. But I’m not perfect and I sometimes fall into old patterns or cheat because I want to. But now I know that if I err, I have the power to bring my body back into balance and to heal again. It’s a wonderful feeling.

Next week in my newsletter, I will be sharing some ways sufferers of psoriasis, eczema and other autoimmune related conditions can help heal themselves. You can sign up for the newsletter on the homepage. In the meantime, these four books are superb for getting started on the path to healing.

3.     Staying Healthy with the Seasons – Dr. Elson M Haas

4.     Hatha Yoga Pradipika - Swami Muktibodhananda

The Hatha Yoga Pradipika is one of the cardinal texts upon which modern yoga is based. And while there are many versions of this text, I’ve found the one written by Swami Muktibodhananda to be the most illuminating one I’ve come across so far, especially in terms of understanding the basic yogic principles of holistic health.
